Kohinoor Jewellers Agra

Romancing the Stone

“Koh-i-Noor or the Mountain of Light” (from the old Persian)

The Kohinoor family were traditionally jewellers to the Mughals in Delhi, and lived in Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi. In 1857 the family moved to the old walled city of Mughal Agra with the last of the Mughals, Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar.

In 1862 the Kohinoor family started their jewellery business from there, and are now five generations into the business! Kohinoor Jewellers is on the well-known Fatehabad Road in Agra, not very far from the Taj Mahal.

Under the Mughals, who were true connoisseurs of art and all things beautiful, and their tasteful passion for fine jewels, Kohinoor became a jewellery house of great repute.

Centuries later, their work is still known for its design, craftsmanship and intricate technique and has been preserved, not as museum specimens, but as pieces of wearable jewellery.

Listed as one of the most exquisite shopping experiences in India by Conde Nast Traveller, the jewellery store loans its work to museums in New York and London, and its craftsmen awarded national honours.

The jewellery itself is a stunning combination of gems and art, both complimenting each other seamlessly, to create exclusive pieces that are classic, timeless, and elegant.

With a matchless hue that mimics the eternal colour of the sky, an oval tourmaline captivates from within a diamond-studded ring of eighteen-carat white gold.

In an alluring necklace, emeralds dangle from over a dozen exquisite strands of leafy, yellow gold vines like luscious drops of shimmering dew.

With names like Moonlit Dream and The Break of Dawn, the collections of this jewellery house capture the essence of nature’s magnificence.

With a near zero manufacturing defect, they have the best craftsmen, gemstones, and graders, to ensure that each piece meets all measures of international quality.

While you’re at the store, do make it a point to see the stunning embroidery museum of Shams, the man whose rare and exquisite masterpieces of embroidery are mixed with jewellery from Kohinoor Jewellers!

Agra now may be an industrial city; soot, smoke, and dust everywhere…but every now and then it surprises…reminding us of the elegance and beauty of a bygone era, and like the Taj, here to stay.
