Gujarat is not only the birthplace of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi but was once also the site of several significant socio-political events, associations, meetings, and activities in the history of India\u2019s struggle for independence.<\/p><p data-start=\"441\" data-end=\"739\">The \u2018haveli\u2019 where Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in <strong data-start=\"519\" data-end=\"532\">Porbandar<\/strong> is one of the biggest highlights on this circuit. The room where he was born has been preserved just the way it was. A part of the house has now been converted into a museum and called the <strong data-start=\"722\" data-end=\"739\">Kirti Mandir.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"741\" data-end=\"1279\">It was in <strong data-start=\"751\" data-end=\"761\">Rajkot<\/strong> that Gandhi spent his childhood, and the family residence, now called <strong data-start=\"832\" data-end=\"858\">\u2018Kaba Gandhi No Delo\u2019,<\/strong> houses a small museum that exhibits a history of various events in Gandhi\u2019s life through pictures. Gandhi returned to Rajkot in 1939 to establish the <strong data-start=\"1009\" data-end=\"1027\">Rashtriyashala<\/strong> to instil the idea of Swaraj (self-rule) during the country\u2019s fight for Independence. Today, the school imparts educational and vocational training; interestingly, it also popularised the art of single <strong data-start=\"1230\" data-end=\"1249\">\u2018ikat\u2019 weaving,<\/strong> a craft Rajkot is famous for.<\/p><p data-start=\"1281\" data-end=\"1762\">Located near Surat, the seaside town of <strong data-start=\"1321\" data-end=\"1330\">Dandi<\/strong> is the iconic site from where Gandhi began his famous <strong data-start=\"1385\" data-end=\"1418\">Salt Satyagraha (Dandi March)<\/strong> in protest against the British Salt Law imposed on India. Dandi shot to worldwide prominence in 1930 when Gandhi marched from Sabarmati (Ahmedabad) to Dandi with a group of followers and volunteers to <strong data-start=\"1620\" data-end=\"1672\">protest against the imposition of a tax on salt.<\/strong> Thousands of people participated, travelling on foot for 24 days from Ahmedabad to Dandi.<\/p><p data-start=\"1764\" data-end=\"1939\">At Dandi, he picked up a handful of saline mud and seawater, <strong data-start=\"1825\" data-end=\"1863\">symbolising the production of salt<\/strong> in defiance of the British law. A memorial statue marks the historic event.<\/p><p data-start=\"1941\" data-end=\"2194\">The <strong data-start=\"1945\" data-end=\"1993\">Gandhi Ashram and the Gandhi Memorial Museum<\/strong> lie across the banks of the <strong data-start=\"2022\" data-end=\"2041\">River Sabarmati<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"2045\" data-end=\"2059\">Ahmedabad.<\/strong> Established in 1918, the spartan and tranquil Ashram is where Gandhi lived, and from where he launched the famous Dandi March in 1930.<\/p><p data-start=\"2196\" data-end=\"2401\">Here, he learnt the art of spinning and weaving <strong data-start=\"2244\" data-end=\"2253\">khadi<\/strong> (a kind of cotton fabric) \u2013 the experiment not only revolutionised a whole new way of producing homespun cloth, but also a way of life and thought.<\/p><p data-start=\"2403\" data-end=\"2749\">The Museum in the Ashram houses the personal effects and memorabilia of Gandhi, depicting historic events in his life.
