Mathura, The Birthplace of Krishna<\/span><\/h1>

There was a dreadful storm blowing that night. It was raining and Yamuna had <\/span>swollen with water gushing all around. Amidst this howling of the winds and wrathful\u00a0<\/span>rain Devaki gave birth to her eighth child who was smuggles out of captivity by his\u00a0<\/span>father and handed over to a friend to be looked after. Nand and Yashoda brought up\u00a0<\/span>this divine child who grew up to destroy the evil King Kamsa\u2019s rule.\u201d (Legend of Lord Krishna)<\/span><\/p>

This story is set in this ethereal town of Mathura and\u00a0<\/span>quintessentially that is the raison d\u2019\u00eatre of the town of Mathura.\u00a0<\/span>It is one of the seven holiest cities in the country and around 3000\u00a0<\/span>BC was a busy urban settlement. The city reverberates with many\u00a0<\/span>stories and lores of Lord Krishna, his birth, his childhood and\u00a0<\/span>his adorable pranks. Mathura also finds mention in the Hindu scriptures of\u00a0<\/span>Ramayana and Mahabharata.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The modern town of Mathura, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, is located\u00a0<\/span>approximately 50 km north of Agra, about 11 km from the town of\u00a0<\/span>Vrindavan and 22 km from Govardhan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

It is said that in Mathura it is easier to count dust particles on the surface\u00a0<\/span>of earth than to count the number of holy places in this city. There are\u00a0<\/span>approximately 5000 splendid temples and more than 25 ghats lined along\u00a0<\/span>calm waters of the river Yamuna and there are steps leading into the water\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

One of the most important temples in Mathura is the Sri Krishna\u00a0<\/span>Janmabhoomi temple. It is considered very special because it is believed that\u00a0<\/span>the temple stands at the same spot where lord Krishna was born to Devaki\u00a0<\/span>and Vasudev. The other important spots include Kokilavan Dham (Shani\u00a0<\/span>Temple), Rangji Temple, Gopishvar Mahadev Temple and many more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

  • Mathura peda <\/strong>(sweet made from milk) (Gosai Pede Wala)<\/li><\/ul>
    • Chana chidwa<\/strong> (savoury) <\/span>(Sri Nath ji Bhandar, Near Prayag Ghat)<\/li><\/ul>
      • Mung dal pakode<\/strong>, <\/span>samosa (fried snack) (Chache ki canteen, Dampier Nagar)<\/li><\/ul>
        • Kachori \u2013 sabji<\/strong> <\/span>(fried flat bread with curry) and jalebi (Oma Pahalwan Kachori wala, Chatta Bazaar)<\/li><\/ul>

          The sacred city of Mathura comes alive\u00a0<\/span>during the wee hours of morning when\u00a0<\/span>thousands of pilgrims take their holy dip in\u00a0<\/span>the sacred Yamuna river and after sunset\u00a0<\/span>when hundreds of diyas and candles\u00a0<\/span>are set afloat on the riverbanks, shining\u00a0<\/span>bright, making way into the holy waters\u00a0<\/span>under the quiet of the starlit sky.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Food in Mathura is predominantly\u00a0<\/span>vegetarian and the eating places around\u00a0<\/span>the town serve authentic and traditional\u00a0<\/span>food that has been prevalent since a long\u00a0<\/span>time. While there are many restaurants\u00a0<\/span>which serve lip smacking vegetarian food,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          there are a few that\u00a0<\/span>need special mentionMathura peda at the\u00a0<\/span>oldest sweet shop in\u00a0<\/span>Mathura Gosai Pede\u00a0<\/span>Wala (since 1832). The chaat is another\u00a0<\/span>must try when visiting Mathura.<\/span>Mathura is one of the most important\u00a0<\/span>places of worship for devotees of Lord\u00a0<\/span>Krishna. Mathura is steeped in devotion\u00a0<\/span>and dedication to Lord Krishna. Festivals\u00a0<\/span>in Mathura also revolve around the\u00a0<\/span>life of Lord Krishna. Janmatshmi which\u00a0<\/span>commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna\u00a0<\/span>and Holi are celebrated with great\u00a0<\/span>enthusiasm and zeal here.\u00a0<\/span>Pravin looks after the\u00a0<\/span>contracting for the business\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
