Interact with locals in Nagaland

Interact with locals in Nagaland

Far from the bustling cities, the state of Nagaland in the northeast corner of India presents an array of colours – its people, their traditions, and their otherworldly ways are unlike anything you will ever witness. The fierce warrior clans of Nagaland are warm and welcoming, and very curious about their guests since the state opened itself to tourists.

In Nagaland’s small villages, you will meet tribes with tattoos on their bodies, donning traditional clothes and headgears adorned with feathers, tusks, and wood. It is impressive that the state has many languages and dialects, each exclusive to its tribe. A factor that binds them is their love for meats. If you’re an adventurous foodie, you will relish local meals that mostly have rice and wild meats such as pork, chicken, birds, and snakes. In fact, the state celebrates a variety of festivals and food is an unmissable part of their revelries.

All across the state, the bazaars are a medley of handcrafted items – as you shop for bead jewellery, shawls, masks, and wood carved products, you can also interact with the skilled artisans who painstakingly make these, and have a chat with them.

It’s best to go to Nagaland in the winter months. Plan your visit around the Hornbill Festival when the city of Kohima celebrates the Naga culture with great aplomb. Interacting with the tribes, you will discover the various traditional and cultural experiences of the tribes that are different from each other in many respects, but together make this state so unique.

Staying with the locals at their humble abode is an experience that is going to stay with you for the rest of your life. Such is the hospitality of the people of rural Rajasthan who believe in making the most out of whatever little they have. And at the end of the day, as the sun goes down in all its glory, the villages’ folklore will mesmerize you like you never could have imagined!

“In 2014, I attended the Hornbill Festival that’s held in Kohima in December every year. I saw live tribal dance performances, sampled local food, and shopped at the stalls. All 16 tribes of Nagaland come to showcase their culture and it’s a wonderful time to be in the city.”

“I spent an entire evening at the Samode village singing and dancing with the locals in their colourful traditional attire. I even tried the Chari dance with a pot on my head. Yes, a definite must try for everyone!”

Rural Rajasthan

Bright, traditional, rustic yet soulful – that is rural Rajasthan for you! Considering the chaotic and busy lives we live, visiting the interiors of the state will make you realize how meditatively beautiful life is beyond the hustle bustle of the cities.

While the desert state is considered a perfect embodiment of richness and royalty, it also offers a much humble sight of a Persian wheel irrigating the lush fields in its rural areas. A group of traditionally dressed women, carrying clay pots on their heads, walking down the dust roads and turban-clad men with majestic mustaches sweating it out in the fields, is a common sight that you will see as you drive through the state. And they do it so effortlessly without any trace of discomfort that, it will not just inspire you but will make you appreciate the simplistic beauty of life.
