The revered Mysore Palace

The revered Mysore Palace

The Mysore Palace has a beautiful sandstone coloured architecture with cherry red dooms. The official residence of the Royal Wodeyar family that once ruled the Mysore Kingdom, it is one of the biggest palaces of the country that is located in the heart of the city of Mysore, now Mysuru, in the state of Karnataka.

The sound and light show that is held in the grounds just in front of the palace is a major tourist attraction. The 45 minute long show that starts at 7 pm is a beautiful rendition of Mysore’s history that is narrated through the combination of light and sound.

Another attraction is the Mysore Dasara festival during which the Palace is illuminated with nearly one lakh LED lights that make it look like a masterpiece made out of gold. The ten days long celebrations take place every year in the months of September or October. Many colourful and extravagant events and concerts are organized in the palace complex during this period. The highlight of the festival is the ‘Jambo Savari,’a procession on the final day of the festival, in which, the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari is carried on an elephant from the royal palace to a place called Bannimantap. All through the journey, people rejoice over the triumph of the Goddess over a demon.

Staying with the locals at their humble abode is an experience that is going to stay with you for the rest of your life. Such is the hospitality of the people of rural Rajasthan who believe in making the most out of whatever little they have. And at the end of the day, as the sun goes down in all its glory, the villages’ folklore will mesmerize you like you never could have imagined!

“If you can time your visit with the Dasara festival, you will get to see the Golden Seat from where the Maharaja conducts his private durbars. It is beautifully decorated with precious stones and jewels and the authorities keep it in a highly secured place for the rest of the year.”

“I spent an entire evening at the Samode village singing and dancing with the locals in their colourful traditional attire. I even tried the Chari dance with a pot on my head. Yes, a definite must try for everyone!”

Rural Rajasthan

Bright, traditional, rustic yet soulful – that is rural Rajasthan for you! Considering the chaotic and busy lives we live, visiting the interiors of the state will make you realize how meditatively beautiful life is beyond the hustle bustle of the cities.

While the desert state is considered a perfect embodiment of richness and royalty, it also offers a much humble sight of a Persian wheel irrigating the lush fields in its rural areas. A group of traditionally dressed women, carrying clay pots on their heads, walking down the dust roads and turban-clad men with majestic mustaches sweating it out in the fields, is a common sight that you will see as you drive through the state. And they do it so effortlessly without any trace of discomfort that, it will not just inspire you but will make you appreciate the simplistic beauty of life.
