Hampi – The Ancient temple town

Hampi – The Ancient temple town

Recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site, Hampi is an epitome of beauty even in ruins. Every rock and every broken pillar that you come across in this little temple town has a unique story to tell.

While there are several places to visit in Hampi, one must not miss out on the famous Virupaksha Temple that can easily be spotted from any part of the town, owing to its tall structure. The serene temple located on the banks of the Tungabhadra river is considered one of the most sacred shrines by the Hindus. And what is really fascinating is that a narrow channel of this river flows from its terrace, down through the temple’s kitchen and out through its courtyard. It is impressive how the beautiful sculptures and finely carved pillars at the temple complex are still intact, considering it has been in existence since the 7th century.

The iconic stone chariot at the Vittala Temple is another major tourist attraction. Facing towards the sanctum of the temple, the chariot is a shrine that is sculpted with intricate designs and statues. The base of the chariot is laced with scenes from mythical battlefields. You can also take a 30 minute trek up to the Matanga Hill early in the morning and witness the fabulous view of the sunrise unfold before you.

Staying with the locals at their humble abode is an experience that is going to stay with you for the rest of your life. Such is the hospitality of the people of rural Rajasthan who believe in making the most out of whatever little they have. And at the end of the day, as the sun goes down in all its glory, the villages’ folklore will mesmerize you like you never could have imagined!

Even though the Matanga Hill is known as the best spot to get a view of Hampi, I particularly loved the sunset view from the Hemakuta hill that is just near the Virupaksha temple. It is an amazing place to take a picture.”

“I spent an entire evening at the Samode village singing and dancing with the locals in their colourful traditional attire. I even tried the Chari dance with a pot on my head. Yes, a definite must try for everyone!”

Rural Rajasthan

Bright, traditional, rustic yet soulful – that is rural Rajasthan for you! Considering the chaotic and busy lives we live, visiting the interiors of the state will make you realize how meditatively beautiful life is beyond the hustle bustle of the cities.

While the desert state is considered a perfect embodiment of richness and royalty, it also offers a much humble sight of a Persian wheel irrigating the lush fields in its rural areas. A group of traditionally dressed women, carrying clay pots on their heads, walking down the dust roads and turban-clad men with majestic mustaches sweating it out in the fields, is a common sight that you will see as you drive through the state. And they do it so effortlessly without any trace of discomfort that, it will not just inspire you but will make you appreciate the simplistic beauty of life.
